AmeriGEO Week 2024: One Health Session & Workshops

The AmeriGEO Week 2024, using the theme Adapting for a Resilient Future, with Earth Intelligence, will be held from August 26-30, 2024 at the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Quito, Ecuador (and virtual), with support by the Ecuador’s National Secretary of Risk Management.

Scientific Session: Looking toward COP29: “One Health” Partnerships to Accelerate Climate Action

Date/time:  August 28 from 11:00AM-1:00PM CT/GMT-5)

Registration LINK for AmeriGEO sessions

  • Organizing Committee: Juli Trtanj (NOAA), John Haynes (NASA), Helena Chapman (NASA), Anna Stewart-Ibarra (Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research)

  • Description: Supported by the Earth Observations for Health, Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, and the Ecuador Ministry of Health, this event will highlight valuable One Health partnerships that accelerate climate action in the Americas region. Panelists will describe health priorities and specific climate drivers, demonstrate the need for innovative approaches to data integration, and promote multidisciplinary collaborations with the health community in the Americas region. Panelists will present examples of heat risk mapping campaigns, vector-borne early warning systems, and air quality monitoring, to identify inequities (including disease hotspots) and strengthen climate and health decision-making activities within the Americas region. Panelists will share best practices on how these regional collaborations have fostered researcher-community engagement, supported timely solutions to address encountered challenges, and ultimately established a sustainable framework toward achieving the ambitious climate and health goals of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Workshop:  Earth Observations for Managing Dengue in the Americas

Date/time:  Thursday, August 29 from 11:00AM-1:00PM CT/GMT-5

Registration LINK for Dengue Workshop

  • Trainers: Hunter Jones (NOAA), Alice Lau (NOAA), Avriel Díaz (GCSE)

  • Description: This side event will offer an in-depth conversational dialogue about the existing barriers in dengue prevention and control across the Americas. Panelists will present the current state of the dengue outbreak in Ecuador and the Americas region, highlight specific Earth science applications in dengue forecasting, and share findings from the dengue training conducted in Costa Rica.

Workshop:  Satellite-Derived Air Quality Information for the Americas

Date/time:  August 29 from 2:00-6:30PM CT/GMT-5

Registration Link for Air Quality Workshop

  • Trainers:  Carl Malings (Morgan State Univ. & NASA GSFC), Nathan Pavlovic (Sonoma Technologies, Inc.), Didier Davignon (Environment and Climate Change Canada), Megan Damon (SSAI & NASA GSFC)

  • Description: This workshop will provide an overview of satellite-derived and model-based resources available from NASA and other organizations which can support the assessment of air quality in the Americas. After a general introduction to the capabilities and limitations of satellites for air quality applications, participants will be shown case study examples of their application to regional air quality assessment, and be introduced to some of the free online tools and resources for interacting with these datasets. Half of the workshop will be set aside to allow participants to collaborate and apply these resources to their own air quality case studies, and to report back to the trainers and other participants about what they found. Workshop participants can expect to gain knowledge of earth observation datasets and resources that can be used to address air pollution challenges related to air quality management, public health, and more.
